Why it’s good to spend time inside your comfort zone

4 reasons why it’s good to spend time inside your comfort zone 

If you spend any time on social media these days, (and let’s face it, who doesn’t right?!) then you could be forgiven for thinking that you should be living your life outside of your comfort zone, all the time. But the good news is, you don’t have to! It’s actually good for you to spend time inside your comfort zone and here’s why.

Every day on my Facebook feed, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter, there’s people doing incredible things and it seems like that’s all they do. It’s great and do love it because it inspires me to be more, do more and stretch my own comfort zone more but there are times when I just need to not be pushing myself to be fearless. 

 

During these times I used to feel guilty because I kept thinking that unless I was facing major fears then I wasn’t growing. I’ll admit there might have even been a bit of peer pressure too thanks to the awesome people I hang out with. Maybe even a bit of social pressure thanks to social media as well 

 

But, over time, as I fought to grapple the torment within myself of my heart wanting to stay put and the outside influence created guilt within my mind, I have come to realise that it’s actually good to spend time inside your comfort zone. It might even be good for you, just don’t stay there too long! 

Here are four reasons why it’s good to spend time in your comfort zone: 

 

  1. You need to recharge - Stepping out of your comfort zone requires emotional, physical, and mental energy, regardless of how fearless you are (and no-one is completely fearless – that’s impossible). So, you naturally need time to re-charge so you have enough energy to face the next fear. 
  1. Mastering a fear is better than just facing it  I’ve discovered over the years that if I only face a fear once, I rarely master it. In fact, sometimes when I come to do something again I’m even more afraid than I was the first time (crazy I know right!) Mastering a fear (step seven in my freedom method) is achieved by facing a fear repeatedly until it has no power over you. This is when your comfort zone has increased to the point where you actually enjoy the activity that scared you before. So it’s ok to play there in your new sized comfort zone and enjoy it.  
  1. You’ve earned it – It takes courage, tenacity, commitment and a whole bunch of energy (as mentioned above) to master a fear so when you get to that point of comfort, it’s ok to revel in it and celebrate your new level of freedom.  
  1. We all need familiarity - According to Tony Robbins and the six human needs, as human beings we all need a little familiarity in order for us to function harmoniously. We all need that feeling of safety which forms part of the foundation that we can then launch from when we have a fear to face.  

 

Don’t get stuck in your comfort zone 

So, as you can see, it’s good to spend time in your comfort zone, just don’t get stuck there! Fear is a clever little monkey and it can easily trick you into staying in your comfort zone because that’s where it can keep you safe.  

As a Fearless Living Coach I have to be aware of this and determine when my client genuinely needs to stand still and when it’s their fear deceiving them into thinking they want to stay the same.
